Virtualization is a technology that is successfully permeating IT shops. The “next big thing” in virtualization is believed to be desktop virtualization, but the hype over the last few years has outstripped deployments. VDI has been significant focus by vendors, including major new releases in 2010 from Citrix and VMware, and initiatives by almost every storage company. VDI is now more than just for simplifying the management of Windows machines as evident from efforts like VMware’s End-User Computing, Cisco’s Virtualization Experience Infrastructure (VXI), and the VDI Coalition.
